Welcome to Licensing Training Services

Licensing Training Services have been providing training courses for the Licensed Trade in Scotland since 2005. Following the introduction of Personal Licences in 2009, we provide regular courses for Personal Licences, and for Refresher Training. The Director of Licensing Training Services, Alistair Macdonald, is a Licensing Solicitor, whose specialist Licensing Firm, Macdonald Licensing, work in tandem with Licensing Training Services.

As a licensing practitioner, Alistair regularly attends Licensing Boards throughout Scotland, and also provides advice on licensing issues, so is able to provide practical examples as part of the courses. We would estimate that approximately 3500 people have been trained by the Company since the introduction of Personal Licences.

Personal License Course

A bit about Personal Licences

The requirement for Personal Licences was introduced by the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005. Since 1^st September 2009, all licensed premises, with a limited exception for Private Members Clubs, require to name a Premises Manager, who must hold a valid Personal Licence. In addition, Personal Licence Holders can apply for Occasional Licences and they can also do staff training. If you wish to work in the Hospitality Industry, even on a part time basis, it has become clear that having a Personal Licence is a major benefit.

People attending our courses can be experienced licensees, or students looking for a part time job. It can be people involved in organising events, or doing pop up bars or food outlets.

In general our courses are held in Edinburgh, at our office in The Hilton Edinburgh Carlton, 19 North Bridge, Edinburgh, EH1 1SD.

Refresher Training is required every 5 years, in order to keep your Licence going. This is effectively the same course but in half the time!

If you have any queries regarding Personal Licences, then please contact us. Queries range from the effect of having criminal convictions on your Application, to the responsibilities of being a Personal Licence Holder or Premises Manager.

Refresher Training Course

Refresher Training

Refresher Training is a Legal Obligation in terms of your Personal Licence.

This must be carried out every five years and is generally a half day course.

The training must be carried out before the relevant deadline and the Certificate then forwarded to the Licensing Board. Unfortunately many people have carried out Refresher Training but have omitted to do this second stage. Licensing Training Services will deal with that matter on your behalf and you will be asked to bring along your Personal Licence, to the Refresher Course, so that we can deal with that for you at no extra charge.
